Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying such treatments should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural changes.
