At least 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
